Biosecurity in Poultry Farms: First Line of Defense Against Disease

Poultry farming plays a vital role in providing affordable animal protein worldwide, but it is highly vulnerable to infectious diseases that can spread rapidly and cause severe economic losses. Biosecurity refers to the set of preventive measures designed to stop the introduction and spread of disease-causing organisms in poultry farms. It includes farm hygiene, controlled access, vaccination, pest control, proper waste disposal, and management practices such as the all-in all-out system. Effective biosecurity reduces disease outbreaks, improves productivity, and ensures sustainable poultry production. This article highlights the importance of biosecurity, major risk factors, practical control measures, and modern approaches to disease prevention in poultry farms.
