The Continuum of Viral Emergence: Patterns, Pressures, and Preparedness

Viruses have shaped human history through pandemics, epidemics, and persistent outbreaks that continue to challenge global public health systems. Although the study of viruses has advanced dramatically over the past century, the emergence and re-emergence of viral diseases remain unpredictable processes driven by complex interactions among humans, animals, and the environment. The terms emerging and re-emerging viruses describe pathogens whose epidemiological patterns shift significantly, resulting in new threats or the return of previously controlled diseases. An emerging virus is typically one that has newly appeared in a population or is expanding its geographic range, often due to spillover from wildlife or domestic animals
