World Zoonoses Day 2026: Community Action Through One Health Is the Foundation for Preventing Future Outbreaks

Every year on 6 July, the global community observes World Zoonoses Day to commemorate a landmark event in the history of preventive medicine. On this day in 1885, Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first rabies vaccine to a young boy bitten by a rabid dog, demonstrating that scientific innovation could prevent one of the world’s most feared infectious diseases. More than a century later, the significance of this achievement extends far beyond rabies. It symbolizes humanity’s continuing struggle against zoonotic diseases—those infections that circulate at the interface of humans, animals and the environment.
