Artificial insemination (AI) has emerged as one of the most effective assisted reproductive technologies in canine breeding, offering a safe and reliable alternative to natural mating. It enables the dissemination of superior genetics, reduces the risk of venereal disease transmission, and facilitates breeding across geographical barriers. Advances in semen collection, evaluation, cryopreservation, and insemination techniques have significantly improved reproductive success in dogs. Fresh, chilled, and frozen semen can be effectively utilized when appropriate semen handling protocols and accurate ovulation timing are followed. Modern diagnostic tools such as vaginal cytology, serum progesterone estimation, ultrasonography, and transcervical insemination have enhanced conception rates while minimizing stress to breeding animals. In addition, emerging technologies including computerassisted sperm analysis (CASA), flow cytometry, artificial intelligence-based fertility prediction, and improved cryopreservation methods are expanding the scope of canine reproductive management. This article provides an overview of the principles, techniques, applications, advantages, limitations, and recent advances in canine artificial insemination, highlighting its importance in improving reproductive efficiency, preserving valuable genetics, and promoting responsible breeding practices.
