The rapid expansion of the Indian poultry industry is driven by advanced genetic selection and high-yielding commercial strains with exceptional feed conversion ratios (FCR). However, this rapid growth is severely constrained by a critical 44% net shortfall in traditional concentrate feed ingredients like maize and soybean meal, whose prices have soared exponentially. Simultaneously, India’s status as the world’s second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables results in an estimated 50 million metric tons (MT) of vegetable waste annually. Roughly 25% to 30% of total cabbage production terminates as agricultural waste, generating substantial greenhouse gases (particularly methane) in landfills. The strategic dietary incorporation of dried cabbage waste meal (CWM) into the rations of fast-growing broiler (such as Cobb 500, Ross 308, and Hubbards). Cabbage leaves are inherently rich in essential minerals (high ash content), vitamins, carotenoids, and bioactive polyphenols. Furthermore, their unique profile of glucosinolates offers powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant benefits that improve gut integrity and bird health. Economically, establishing a structured local supply chain between vegetable wholesale markets, farmers, and decentralized processing centers can render CWM an affordable, sustainable, and highly accessible alternative raw material. Incorporating CWM into broiler diets at safe, optimal thresholds reduces feed costs (which constitute up to 70% of recurring production expenses) without compromising growth performance. Ultimately, this approach presents a circular bio-economy strategy that optimizes modern genetic potential, lowers meat production costs, and mitigates the environmental impact of agricultural waste.
