AbstractIn ruminants, dietary protein is extensively degraded by rumen micro-organisms and converted into microbial protein, a process that is often inadequate to meet the amino acid requirements of rapidly growing or high-producing animals. Bypass protein, also known as rumen undegradable protein (RUP) or rumen-protected protein, refers to dietary protein that escapes microbial degradation in the rumen, passes intact to the lower digestive tract, and is digested and absorbed there, thereby supplying amino acids directly to the host animal. This article reviews the concept and necessity of bypass protein, the principal methods used to protect dietary protein from rumen fermentation — including oesophageal groove closure, postruminal infusion, heat treatment, tannin binding, formaldehyde treatment and amino acid protection — along with natural high, intermediate and low bypass-protein feed sources, quality specifications for commercial bypass protein feeds, and the physiological situations and production benefits associated with its use. Feeding bypass protein has been reported to improve growth rate, milk yield, reproductive efficiency and milk composition in ruminants, though its adoption is tempered by processing cost and the need for careful quality control. A clear understanding of bypass protein technology can help nutritionists and dairy farmers formulate more efficient rations for high-yielding and rapidly growing ruminants.
