AbstractDesigner eggs are nutritionally enriched eggs produced by modifying the diets of laying hens to increase selected nutrients beyond their usual levels. These nutrients may include omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, vitamins D and E, and carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin. Feed formulation is the primary method of enrichment, with nutrient deposition influenced by the ingredients used, their availability, the balance of the diet and the physiological condition of the hen. Flaxseed, fish oils and microalgae are potential sources of omega-3 fatty acids, while selenium-enriched yeast, vitamin supplements and carotenoid-rich ingredients can support other enrichment strategies. Laboratory analysis is essential to verify nutrient concentrations and substantiate product claims. Proper formulation, feed quality control, hygienic handling and appropriate storage are also necessary to maintain egg quality and safety. Although designer eggs offer opportunities for nutritional value addition and improved farm income, their commercial success depends on production costs, consumer acceptance, reliable nutritional labelling and market demand. A planned approach integrating poultry nutrition, quality testing and marketing can help develop sustainable designer egg enterprises.
